Cologne president Wolfgang Overath has resigned.

At a meeting with the club’s supervisory board, the 68-year-old announced he was stepping down, with immediate effect.

Vice-presidents Jurgen Glowacz and Friedrich Neukirch have also left the club.

“The decision is really difficult, because the FC were always close to my heart and will remain,” Overath said.

Overath, Glowacz and Neukirch released an official statement on the club’s official website.

“At the end of today’s members’ meeting, we will resign from our positions as president and vice-presidents,” it read.

“Koln are well set up for the future. The committed leadership with sporting director Volker Finke and coach Stale Solbakken are doing a great job. The team have plenty of potential.”

“We have to thank all those who accompanied us in the last seven years, supporting us and giving their trust.”

“We thank the fans – they are the heart of this team. We thank the sponsors and businesses that support the club.”

“We wish all our FC and FC fans a successful future and our successors the best of luck.”
