Competition: League One
Market: Oxford United win
Odds: 7/10 @ 888sport
Looking to make it back-to-back League One victories on New Year’s Day, Oxford will host a struggling Cheltenham on Saturday afternoon.
Starting with the hosts, while Oxford might have been left frustrated by that action-packed 3-2 defeat against Wigan on December 18th, Karl Robinson’s men certainly came roaring back earlier in the week. Making their return from an enforced break, the Yellows were last seen on Wednesday night as they stormed to a 3-0 romp against AFC Wimbledon on home soil. Likewise, with just a single League One defeat to their name since way back in the middle of October, the former MK Dons boss should find the mood in his camp at a red-hot high. Firmly leading the race to clinch a play-off spot in England’s third-tier, Oxford have also largely impressed with their continued displays at the Kassam Stadium. Losing just one of their last eight contests on home soil, Robinson’s men should be smelling a real chance here.
As for the visitors, while Oxford might be enjoying an eye-catching run of form, the same cannot be said for a struggling Cheltenham side. Despite making their League One return last season, Michael Duff’s men have failed to build off of their own bounce earlier in the campaign. Slipping out of the top-half of the table, the Robins were last seen getting hit with a 2-0 defeat against Plymouth on home soil. In fact, mustering just a single point from any of their last five outings, Saturday’s guests have also shown some extended problems at the back. Including 5-0 and 4-3 defeats against Cambridge and AFC Wimbledon, Duff’s side have conceded at least a pair of goals in each of their previous six straight outings. Given the recent gulf in class, we’re backing a home victory here on New Year’s Day.
