Mesut Ozil has announced that he is retiring from professional football at the age of 34.
Throughout the course of his career, dating back to 2005, he played for Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Fenerbahce and Istanbul Basaksehir. He also represented Germany on the international stage, winning the World Cup in the process.
His other honours included winning the DFB-Pokal, La Liga, Copa del Rey and FA Cup four times.
Over the course of the last few years, Ozil has certainly taken a bit of a beating when it comes to his overall reputation. Despite being one of the best players in the world in his prime, things haven’t quite been the same since he left the Gunners.
With that being said, it’s pretty hard to deny what an impact he had at his peak. On his day, he could terrorise just about any defence on the planet.
Good luck in retirement, Mesut.
