Ozil concern for Germany ahead of Kazakh clash

Germany’s Mesut Ozil will undergo a last-minute test on an ankle injury before the World Cup semi-finalists take on Kazakhstan in their Euro 2012 qualifier on Tuesday, the national federation said.

The Real Madrid star scored the second goal in a 3-0 defeat of Turkey in their Group A qualifier on Friday but was replaced in the 90th minute as he struggled with his ankle problem.

The 21-year-old was due to miss training on Sunday but will “definitely” fly to Astana with the rest of the squad on Monday, the German Football Federation (DFB) said.

“National coach Joachim Loew has arranged with the doctors and physical trainers to give him a fitness test in the final training session on Monday,” the DFB said in a statement.

“It still hurts. But I trust in the swift treatment I have been given by the national team doctors and physios,” Ozil said. “I hope that I can get fit again quickly.

“I really want to play.”

Born and bred in Germany to Turkish parents, Ozil was booed by boisterous Turkish fans who made up more than half of the 74,244-capacity Olympic Stadium crowd, but he silenced the jeers with a 79th-minute goal to seal the win.

His celebrations were muted, almost embarrassed, however, “out of respect for the land of my forefathers,” the midfielder said on Saturday.

“Of course I was really happy. It was fantastic for me to score in this match. But I made the spontaneous decision not to overdo the celebrations,” he said.

He also managed to block out the boos from the Turkish crowd.

“I just shut it out and focused on the game. I just wanted to play the game and that’s what I did. The team and the German fans were a great support.

“That makes me really happy.”

Germany took the lead when Miroslav Klose scored just before half-time and the Bayern Munich star — who has yet to score a goal in the Bundesliga this season after seven matches — slotted home his second on 87 minutes.

Germany, whose largely youthful side’s vibrant play was one of the highlights of the World Cup finals, head the group with nine points from three matches after their defeat over Turkey.

Guus Hiddink-coached Turkey are third on six after suffering their first defeat of the qualifying campaign.

“We deserved to win,” Ozil said.
