As he told The Athletic journalist David Ornstein in an exclusive interview, Mesut Ozil has no intention of leaving Arsenal before his contract expires next year.
The 31-year-old made a total of 23 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions in 2019/20, scoring just once and assisting his teammates three times. The last time he took to the pitch was a 1-0 home triumph over West Ham back in March, which means he didn’t play at all after football came back from the pandemic-imposed break. He had fallen out of favour with Unai Emery at the start of the season, and he obviously hasn’t fared any better since Mikel Arteta took over.
Ozil currently earns 350,000 per week, and Arsenal would obviously love to get that expense off their backs as soon as possible. Ozil practically admits as much, but his stance is pretty firm in that matter. Just as a player has to accept the club’s decision not to sell him when he wants to leave, the club has to accept the players decision when it’s the other way around, he claims.
The attacking midfielder is, however, prepared to fight for his place in the team in the upcoming season.
