Mesut Ozil is determined to resist any efforts from Arsenal to sell him this summer and see the remainder of his contract out at the Emirates, according to ESPN.
The attacking midfielder is by far the highest-paid player in the Arsenal squad, which makes very little sense for the club given that his on-pitch role is now practically non-existent. He was not named in the squad for the Manchester City trip on Wednesday, and he sat out the Brighton defeat on Saturday on the bench. His contract, which reportedly sees him earn around £350,000 per week, expires in 2021.
Arsenal are attempting a heavy task of restructuring their team on a very tight budget. Ozil was made available last year too in order for his wages to be removed from their bill, but as no club was willing to match his wages, the issue remains unresolved. It is likely to persist for another year, given the 31-year-old’s stance.
