Pachuca defeated Al Wahda 4-2 on penalties to claim fifth place in the FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday.
Mexican side Pachuca scored twice in the last 10 minutes to ensure the score finished 2-2, before Abdulraheem Jumaa and Modibi Diarra missed penalties in the shootout to consign Al Wahda to defeat.
Brazilian Hugo set up Ismail Matar for Al Wahda’s opener two minutes before half-time at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
The United Arab Emirates champions appeared on course to claim fifth when Mahmoud Al Hammadi made it two on 76 minutes, but Dario Cvitanich got a goal back for Pachuca in the 81st minute.
The Argentine netted again just seven minutes later to pull Pachuca level and send the match into extra time.
Neither side was able to find a breakthrough during the additional 30 minutes, leaving Pachuca to net all of their first three penalties.
Hugo and Basheer Saeed scored the first two for Al Wahda but Jumaa and Diarra both failed to convert, leaving Braulio Luna to score the winner with Pachuca’s fourth kick of the shootout.
