(GSM) – Reds legend Gary Pallister believes that Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic will play vital role and can help deliver the title again this season.

Their central-defence partnership is widely held to be the best at United since the days of Dolly and Daisy, aka Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister. He stressed the significance of a settled back four at the business end of the season.

“It’s so important, the understanding that Rio and Nemanja have,” said Gary.

Reds legend continued, “Together with Edwin van der Sar, they really gave us a base to work from last year, especially when we weren’t very prolific and we were winning a lot of games one-nil.”

“That stability has been missing at times this season and we’ve looked more vulnerable. Fortunately, we have scored a lot of goals and that’s got us through games,” he explained.

He hopes the centre-backs have a big part to play, “I think Rio and Vidic are still finding their best form because they’ve been out for so long through injuries and suspensions. But coming into this vital part of the season, I think they could have a huge say in where the title goes.”

While praising the senior pair, Pallister also had words of encouragement for their deputy.

“I think Jonny Evans is a terrific player as well,” said Gary.

“And with the signing of Chris Smalling from Fulham, it stands United in good stead for the future, for whenever Rio goes. It all depends on how Rio’s feeling. If he’s got to the root of his back problem, he could play on for a few more years yet,” he predicted about Rio’s future.
