South Korea midfielder Park Ji-Sung has revealed Manchester United’s bid to win five trophies in one season is being driven by the memory of last year’s failed attempt to land the treble.
United won the Premier League and Champions League last season but fell short in the FA Cup after suffering a shock home defeat to Portsmouth in the quarter-finals.
Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari’s penalty secured a 1-0 victory over Sir Alex Ferguson’s team, who finished the match with defender Rio Ferdinand in goal after Tomas Kuszczak was sent off.
Although United ended the campaign by winning their main targets, Park insisted his team-mates were still disappointed not to have completed a second historic treble.
United can make amends in style this year. They have already won the Club World Cup and League Cup and lead the Premier League by seven points. Ferguson’s team are also in the FA Cup semi-finals against Everton and host Inter Milan in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday.
“We know how easy it is to make mistakes and go out of competitions – like we did in the FA Cup against Portsmouth,” Park told The Sun.
“This time we won’t make those mistakes again. We have a stronger squad now and we are more concentrated each game. Everybody is fresh to play and it won?t happen again.
“It was important for us to win against Fulham with the Milan game coming up.
“It gives us more confidence for that. We’re very happy with the way we played and we want to take that into the Inter game.
“We feel we can win all five trophies. What we are doing is the only thing we can do, which is to concentrate on each and every single game, one at a time. Then, at the end of the season, we can really go for the trophies.”
