A successor to Paul the Octopus has been introduced at a Berlin aquarium two days before the FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off.

Paul made headlines around the world after correctly predicting the outcome of eight matches during the 2010 World Cup.

He was such a success that the aquarium’s owners decided to introduce a fortune teller to each of their eight German branches.

Paul’s successor Ophira has predicted that Germany will defeat Canada in the opening game of the tournament on Sunday.

The octopus which correctly predicts most correct results will win a gold medal.

“Everything is based on octopus Paul,” Berlin Sea Life centre manager Sandra Schmalzried said.

“We all remember the men’s World Cup. So, we had the idea of finding the octopus champion. We obviously hope that Ophira will get us the gold medal.”

Ophira’s brother Paul, who is working at the Oberhausen branch where the ‘original’ Paul was based, was less decisive.

According to witnesses, Paul headed straight for the Canadian flag but then got distracted by camera flashes and changed his mind.
