Paul Merson has said that he cannot believe that Chelsea let Willian leave for London and Premier League rivals Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
The former Arsenal star believes that Willian – who can play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger – is a brilliant signing for the Gunners.
The Brazil international joined Mikel Arteta’s side on a free transfer earlier this summer after leaving Chelsea at the end of last season.
The 32-year-old had been on the books of the Blues since the summer of 2013 when he joined from FC Anzhi Makhachkala.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, the Brazilian won the Premier League twice, and the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League once each.
Willian made his debut in the Premier League for Arsenal last weekend, as the Gunners got the better of London rivals Fulham 3-0 at Craven Cottage.
The Brazilian played a key role in all three goals at the London derby, with the win seeing the odds of Arsenal finishing in the top four raised to 15/8 by Betfair.
Sky Sports pundit Merson believes that Chelsea should have handed Willian a new contract instead of letting him go on a free transfer at the end of last season.
Merson told Sky Sports: “I cannot believe Chelsea let Willian go. I know they have gone out and get special players, but there is nothing to say they are going to hit the ground running. In Willian, you have got someone there who is ready-made. I like who they have signed, but they cost a lot of money, and their wages are probably the same as Willian.”
