It may not have been the most exciting of World Cup finals but Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina says all that matters to him is the eventual Spanish victory.
“I don’t mind about the quality of the final, all that mind about is this and that we have it so we will go into history and you know it’s an amazing feeling,” he told SoccerNews.com, pointing to the gold medal hanging around his neck. “It feels – there are no words to describe it! I mean, it’s the biggest tournament in the world so we are really really proud of what we did and I think the people in Spain are feeling the same so we are lucky to be here,” he added.
Reina also paid special tribute to Spanish players who had missed out on this year’s World Cup. “I want to remember the ones that couldn’t be here, you know the players who have all the time been with us and they couldn’t make it – it’s for them, it’s for all of us and for the rest of the country.”
He added that the aggressive approach of the Dutch was normal. “They were a little bit (aggressive) – it’s normal, it’s a final – there’s a lot at stake and we did what we knew and at the end I think the football itself has won the World Cup.”
When asked how much further this young Spanish team – who are also European Champions – could go, Reina said that they want to win many more titles. “We did it. We have done everything. To win the European Championships and the World Cup together you know is the maximum you can ask of any team. Of course we want to win many more titles. The pressure is never again on us.”
Reina concluded that he was delighted to be able to savour the moments following the victory with his little daughter who had joined him on the field. “Yeah she was there and I was delighted because I could share with her. I was really really happy – it was an incredible moment.”
