Desperate to find some stability and close the gap at the top of the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich will make the trip to Freiburg’s Schwarzwald-Stadion on Wednesday night.

Starting with the hosts, while many in Freiburg’s camp would have expected their 1-0 win over Wolfsburg earlier in the month as a way to kickstart their campaign, Christian Streich’s men have continued on what has been a lackluster run of form. With just a single victory since the 10th of November, including shipping four against Borussia Mönchengladbach last month, Freiburg have fallen away from the European positions. Despite snatching a point off of the defending champions when they met back in March, they have only recorded a single victory over Bayern on home soil since they first met back in 2005. With the mood in their camp remaining incredibly fragile, Wednesday could prove to be yet another tough test.

As for the visitors, while Bayern might be dealing with their own inconsistencies this season, caretaker boss Hans-Dieter Flick has seen his side land back-to-back victories, including picking up a 3-1 win over Spurs while on European duties last week. If Munich are to close the gap at the top of the table, there is no doubt that Wednesday’s traveling support will be calling on Philippe Coutinho to extend on what has been a scintillating purple patch. Picking up the match ball in Bayern’s victory over Werder Bremen on Saturday afternoon, the Brazil international has four goals in his last two appearances for the reigning champions. Given the Barcelona loanee is enjoying his brightest spell at the Allianz, we’re backing Coutinho to extend on that tally in midweek.
