Philippe Coutinho has agreed to join Aston Villa on loan from Barcelona for the rest of the season, the Premier League club have confirmed, pending a medical and the acquisition of the required work permit.
The Brazilian joined Barcelona from Liverpool in a deal worth up to €160 million, but his performances and overall contribution at the Catalan club fell thoroughly short of expectations imposed by being the third most expensive signing in the history of the sport.
The attacking midfielder enjoyed a relatively successful loan spell with Bayern Munich in 2019-20, winning the treble comprised of the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and the Champions League, but the German champions chose not to make the signing permanent in the end.
At the age of 29, there is still no place for Coutinho in the ranks at Barcelona, and a spell back in the Premier League, not to mention playing under former teammate Steven Gerrard, might do a lot in terms of getting his career back on the right track.
