Steven Piernaar is training with Sunderland in a hope to earn a contract ahead of the new season, according to the Mail Online.
The South Africa international was released by Everton at the end of the 2015/16, and should he sign a deal with the North East club he would be reunited with former Toffees boss David Moyes, who was named as Sam Allardyce’s replacement at the Stadium of Light last month.
Moyes signed Piennar initially on loan from Borussia Dortmund in 2007, before taking him on a permanent deal a year later.
He was sold to Tottenham Hotspur in January 2011 but only played eighteen times for the North London club before returning to Goodison Park for a second spell.
In total, he made two hundred and twenty-nine appearances for the Merseyside outfit in all competitions, scoring twenty-four goals while he was capped his country sixty-one times.
