Argentina midfielder Javier Pinola was on Wednesday banned for four games by the German Football Federation (DFB) for spitting at Germany star Bastian Schweinsteiger during a Bundesliga match.
Nuremberg midfielder Pinola spat at the Bayern Munich player during an incident when the pair clashed in the 43rd minute of Bayern’s 3-0 win at Munich’s Allianz Arena last Sunday.
The referee initially missed the incident, but a DFB disciplinary committee investigated the matter on Monday and announced their decision on Wednesday.
The Argentinian was found guilty of ‘extreme sporting misconduct’ and he will miss the next four German league matches.
He will next be available for Nuremberg’s game against Hanover on December 18.
Pinola apologised by telephone to Schweinsteiger, who is set to captain Germany against Sweden on Wednesday in a friendly, after the incident.
