Pique confident of Barca character

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is confident his side can bounce back after Saturday’s 1-0 La Liga humbling by Getafe.

The title holders’ first league defeat this season ensured Pep Guardiola’s men fall six points behind leaders Real Madrid in chase for the title, but Pique was adamant his side can track down their bitter rivals.

“I’m convinced that the team will give everything they’ve got to be fighting for the title at the end of the season,” Pique said after the match at Getafe’s Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

The Spain international called on the Camp Nou faithful to ‘trust the team’:”There are many games still yet to be played and a lot of points up for grabs,” he said.

“The league standings show that (Real) Madrid are doing things a bit better this season and we have to turn this situation around. We are Barca and we’ll move forward.”

Goalkeeper Victor Valdes said Getafe caught Barcelona with their guard down and were duly punished.

“We’re disappointed because it was a defeat that wasn’t expected. The team did a good job but we didn’t take advantage of our chances.”

“We knew we had to win here but it didn’t work out. We have to pick ourselves up because we have a game right around the corner,” Valdes said.

“We have to keep on fighting. The sooner we lift our heads the better. We have to work hard because we have a game in a couple of days. We have to concentrate on winning our matches.”

“It’s a really negative result and we have to pick ourselves up as soon as possible.”

Barcelona have little time to dwell on the result, with a hosting of Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Tuesday.
