Barcelona are set to tie down central defender Gerard Pique to a new long-term contract, according to Catalan newspaper El Mundo Deportivo.
The player’s current deal is due to expire in June 2015 and the club officials have already opened talks with Pique’s representatives.
El Mundo Deportivo has suggested that sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and agent Arturo Canales are close to reaching an agreement after holding a meeting in England.
Pique is, therefore, expected to put pen to paper on a contract until June 2018 as he will be rewarded for becoming a key player at Camp Nou.
The 27-year-old returned to the club from Manchester United in the summer of 2008 and has since enjoyed a great deal of success in Catalunya.
His side currently trail Real Madrid in the La Liga standings, and they are available at 6/4 to turn things around and defend the league trophy after all.
