Orlando Pirates scored twice within 11 minutes during the first half for a 2-0 win over arch foes Kaizer Chiefs in a Soweto derby staged far from its roots.
Renovations to national Soccer City stadium ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa meant one of the biggest club fixtures on the continent was staged at Mmabatho Stadium in this north-west town.
Chiefs started the South African Premiership game as slight favourites after three consecutive league wins, but were on the back foot from the kick-off in baking heat that necessitated a mid-first half ‘water break’.
National team goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune rescued Chiefs several times before Zimbabwean striker Gilbert Mushangazhike headed across him into the far corner of the net to give the Buccaneers a 21st-minute lead.
A drive from Pirates midfielder Teko Modise rebounded off the woodwork just before Pirates increased their advantage on 31 minutes as defender Lucas Thwala emphasised their aerial dominance by heading home a cross.
Chiefs introduced defender Jimmy Tau and midfielder Thuso Phala for the second half, but it was the victors who came closest to scoring with a post once more depriving Modise of his first goal this season.
The Amakhosi remained fourth on 12 points despite the loss, ahead of Pirates only on goals scored, and the most popular South African football clubs trail surprise early pacesetters Wits University by four points.
