This week two players have came back to haunt their favourite clubs. The two players I’m talking about are Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell. They came back to haunt their old clubs in very different ways though.
Carlos Tevez is of course a former Manchester United player and Sir Alex Ferguson decided he wasn’t worth the money they had to pay to keep him.
He received a typical ex-player welcome from the United fans. The usual booing and the chanting an ex-player receives, especially when he moves to a clubs bitter rival.
Gestures
Even United substitute Gary Neville tried to give Tevez a hard time by making an obscene gesture to the Argentine. However Tevez took it in his stride and got his revenge for all the grief he’s received since crossing the city by scoring a twice.
Fire
He got the last laugh in this game but there is still the second game to come. If he plays with the same fire in his belly as he did last night then United could be in trouble. The script was written that the Argentinian would come back to haunt United at some point and this proved the moment.
It’s very rare for a player to show such emotion in a game but he had every right to be emotional. He has been criticised for his celebration when scoring but he’s only human. You couldn’t expect him to score against a club, who he felt had rejected him, and not be delighted.
Campbell Suing
Sol Campbell has came back to haunt Portsmouth off the pitch by suing his former club. Just what Portsmouth needs eh, more financial troubles? This sounds like a naive question to ask but why on earth is Arsenal defender Sol Campbell trying to sue Portsmouth?
The player is allegedly demanding £1.7million in bonuses and back payments. Campbell sent the club a writ through his lawyer and Portsmouth lawyers are now set to deal with the situation. I would imagine they are already quite busy fighting off the other vultures all looking for their pound of Pompey flesh.
Rich
Campbell has just re-signed for Arsenal and must be financially set for the rest of his life. He’s not poor and he could have decided not to pursue the matter. He could have told his former club to write off the debt and allow them to pay the debts that could make the club cease to exist. However he decided not to help his former club.
Winding-Up
Portsmouth are heavily in debt and their financial troubles are well documented. The club is close to going out of business. The club are struggling to pay the players wages and are currently fighting a winding-up petition from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.
Insult
Campbell suing just adds insult to injury to a club that were not too long ago FA Cup winners. Their fortunes have taken a massive downturn since then. Campbell was once captain of Pompey and surely he could have delayed this action until the club were in a better financial state.
Campbell illustrated just why footballers are resented by a lot of hardworking people. He has shown a greedy and selfish attitude by taking the course of action he has and I don’t think he will be welcomed back by Portsmouth fans anytime soon.
Has he got some sort of grievance with Portsmouth? The fees he’s believed to be demanding are bonus payments and image rights. So not content with receiving his massive wages at Portsmouth, he now has to be greedy and demand even more money from a club in such a perilous financial position.
Cause
Those previously mentioned massive wages are one of the causes of Pompey’s debts. His ridiculous wages and wages of other players formerly at the club drained the cash reserves and lead the club to financial meltdown. If Pompey does go under Campbell will express his disappointment, yet his selfish actions have only made Pompey’s troubles worse.
