Anderlecht’s Polish international Marcin Wasilewski suffered a double facture of his right leg after a horror tackle in the Belgian league match against Standard Liege on Sunday.

The player was left writhing in agony after the collision with Liege midfielder Axel Witsel.

“Marcin’s season is over,” said Anderlecht coach Ariel Jacobs.

Witsel insisted he had not meant to harm his opponent.

“We both went for the ball. I am not a violent player, I don’t play football to break legs,” he said.

The game finished in a 1-1 draw with Anderlecht staying top of the table.

Anderlecht also lost Czech international Jan Polak who suffered torn knee ligaments, an injury which Jacobs claimed was caused by a foul committed by striker Igor De Camargo.

If you watch the footage properly, you can see that Witsel is not looking at the ball but the player. He meant to get him not the ball. Obviously he did not intend to give him a career threatening injury, but i think it’s obvious he meant to hurt him. There is, quite simply, no excuse for this. I hate to see this kind of thing, it is so much worse that diving and i think he (Witsel) should be given a ban suitable to this kind of intentional injury. He should feel so very bad, and quite clearly IS a violent player. I hope at some point Witsel come across a psycho like himself on the pitch very soon. And i doubt many could genuinely argue with that.

It might be good to give the background to this horrible attack from Mr Witsel. Standard de Liège won the league last year after 2 playoff-games, both teams having ended with the same number of points, but Anderlecht with the better goal average. In the second playoff game, Sinan Bolat, Standard keeper, broke the jaw of Boussoufa, Anderlecht’s star player and Anderlecht’s Jelle Van Damme was accused of racism by Standard’s Onyewu, now at AC Milan.
Just before the start of this season, Anderlechtplayer Jelle Van Damme asked to be kept out of the selection before the Champions League qualifying game against Sivaspor, because ” a premier league team already qualified for the Champion’s League” was interested in buying him. A quick glance at the possible teams made it clear soon though that the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester Utd couldn’t possibly be interested in a player of his calibre, and if they were, they would at least respect the rules and contact Anderlecht to express their intentions of buying the player. Standard de Liège soon became the suspect: they were already qualified for the CL, and they have a habit of doing transfers in an “unorthodox way”, destabilising their main rival on the way.
Finally, Wasylewski has been criticised ever since he came to Belgium for the use of his elbows while going for the ball, this came to a culmination point this season, due to the media overexposing this part of his game. Nonetheless, Wasyl never assaulted a player in the way Witsel did yesterday.
Hearing the commentaries from Witsel’s teammates after the game, one could come to think that the nature of this assault was premeditated, which it probably was. That is: The seriousness of the injury wasn’t premeditated, but the assault clearly was, partly due to the animosity that was built up before the game.
