This site has been running a poll for a while now regarding who is England’s best player. Very kindly, well over five hundred readers have registered a vote so whilst the result is not exactly scientific, we have a reasonable number of opinions to be able to make sensible deductions.
The result of the poll has been as follows:
Wayne Rooney 43%
Steve Gerrard 23%
Theo Walcott 16%
Frank Lampard 9%
Rio Ferdinand 3%
John Terry 2%
Others 3%
So what can we deduce from that? Well, we can see that Wayne Rooney has finished first quite comfortably. That surprises me somewhat as, although I probably agree with the result, Steve Gerrard has a huge number of admirers around the world.
Theo Walcott finished third which must be based pretty much on that one game in Croatia. Good though that was and exciting prospect that he is, are you really sure? England’s best player? Well, eighty-six of you think he is.
Frank Lampard maintains some support but he is well down the list. A similar poll two years ago would have seen him get a much higher number of votes. He is in great form for Chelsea and he could still get back to somewhere near the top of the list.
Rio Ferdinand beats John Terry. I know it was only by two votes but I’m really pleased by that. I have always thought that Rio was the better player and have been shouted down on more than one occasion by very vociferous Terry fans.
Eighteen people voted for players other than the six listed. Your guess as to who they voted for is as good as mine!
So there we have it. Wayne Rooney is England’s best player according to Soccernews readers. Good choice that is. The site is happy to associate itself with the result!
