Portsmouth move for Real Madrid striker

Real Madrid striker Javier Saviola is set to join relegation strugglers Portsmouth on loan, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports that the striker has turned down moves to fellow Premier League clubs Newcastle and Everton in favor of a move to the south coast after being persuaded by boss Tony Adams to help out in the clubs relegation battle.

The Argentinian is set to travel to England this week and there are rumors that the star was seen in Fratton Park last night as Pompey lost 1-0 to high-flyers Aston Villa.

Manager Adams said: ‘I would still like a midfielder and a striker and hopefully we can get them in this week. We need some bodies.

‘We have a budget here. I do not have £40 million pounds to spend and most of my work will be done in the summer.’

Portsmouth’s sale of Lassana Diarra to Real Madrid is likely to benefit the club as the Spanish giants are set to loan out the striker, rather than sell to numerous interested clubs.

Saviola is said to be unhappy at Real Madrid after continually falling behind in the pecking order under manager Juande Ramos, especially with the recent signing of Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

It’s a difficult situation. You have to be very strong mentally because as each game goes by without playing you are destroyed a little more psychologically,” the 27-year-old told Spanish sports paper Marca.

“I spoke to  Juande to find out where I stood. I told him I needed to play and if I wasn’t in his plans to notify the management to allow me to go during the January transfer window because this situation is intolerable.”

“My patience had run out last summer, I spoke to Schuster to find out if he was really counting on me for this year and he said he was. He advised me to stay.”

“The club imposed a series of conditions for me to be able to go in January even though they said they still counted on me but it has all been thrown in the air by the resignation of the club president last week,” said Saviola.
Saviola began his career in Argentina at his first club River Plate, where he won the South American Footballer of the Year award at just 18 years old.
Top European clubs then began a bidding war for the striker, which Barcelona won when the Argentinian moved to the Nou Camp for a fee of £15 million.
Despite finishing as the 3rd top scorer in the La Liga at just 19 in his debut season, Saviola then fell out of favor at the Nou Camp moving on to Real Madrid in 2007, where has suffered a similar fate.
