Portsmouth are refusing to comment on any rumours linking the club with a £4 million bid for former Arsenal star Patrick Vieira, according to the Daily Mail.
Vieira, 32, only made 12 league appearances last season for Inter Milan and new manager Jose Mourinho is said to be looking for midfielders like Chelsea’s Michael Essien and Frank Lampard as well as Barcelona’s Deco, who would surely move ahead of the Vieira in the first-team pecking order.
The French captain is currently with the France squad for Euro 2008 and it is unlikely any deal would be struck until the tournament is over, especially with Mourinho still deciding on plans at the San Siro.
Vieira is likely to command high wages, with around £100,000-a-week the likely target according to the Daily Mail.
Portsmouth Chief Executive Peter Storrie has admitted that manager Harry Redknapp wants at least five new signings this summer, and at least three of those to be “top quality” signings who can help Pompey in their UEFA Cup campaign and the clubs target of another top ten finish in the league.
However, a Portsmouth spokesperson kept quiet over who the club are signing saying: “We are being linked to one big name after another and it is bound to happen but we are still not commenting.”
