(GSM) – Portugal and Korea DPR will re-unite on Monday reviving memories of one of the most famous clashes in World Cup history.
An Eusebio-inspired Portugal trumped Korea DPR 5-3 in the quarterfinals at the 1966 World Cup, which to this day continues to resonate as one of the greatest games ever in football’s premier tournament.
The Koreans took a 3-0 lead inside the first 25 minutes against one of the tournament favorites at Goodison Park, Liverpool.
But Eusebio’s four goal haul, which included two penalties, swung the tie in the Europeans favour.
And Jose Augusto sealed the tie with a 80th minute goal, but the Os Magriços would eventually go on to lose to tournament winners England.
Since then, Korea DPR is making its first World Cup appearance, and earned a respectable 2-1 defeat to Brazil in its opening game.
Draw is the only option for the Korean side if they are to keep their ambitions alive of reaching the round of 16.
Portugal, which drew 0-0 with Ivory Coast in its Group G opener, needs a win, given its last group game will be against Brazil.
