(GSM) – Cesare Prandelli still has regrets about the first leg in München but focused on his ‘pride for a Fiorentina that won six of its eight games in this year’s Champions League campaign.’

Fiorentina lost their opener in the Champions League, but then recorded five straight victories to top their group and beat Bayern München 3-2 last night.

“Clearly we’re very upset, but also proud of taking the team to win six of its eight games. I’m proud of the lads who gave their all and were also attentive tactically,” Prandelli said of the exit on away goals, 4-4 on aggregate.

Ultimately the Miroslav Klose winner in München that was several yards offside turned out to be decisive.

“It’s a great shame that the goal from the first leg proved so important. My players should not feel frustrated,” added the Italian coach.

They are working to become great players and games like this can help you realise that you can take on absolutely anyone. When playing at this level and defeating Bayern München, you can only be proud.

“We are trying to tell the team that when they are united and can read both attack and defence, they can achieve great things.

“Unfortunately we went into an emergency situation with five injuries that lasted several months, so that meant the same players had to do extra work and inevitably lost sharpness.”

Now the tactician hopes that Fiorentina can turn things around in the Serie A, where they are only in 10th place.

“I think this match gave a strong signal to everyone – fans and players – that this is a side that plays good football and can go right to the end of the season with this spirit.

“I am convinced that after this performance we will face the next few matches with a different mentality.”
