It’s been a long two months, but the Bundesliga is back in business as German football becomes the first of its kind across Europe to start back up again – outside of Belarus, that is. The game is going to look and feel pretty different for the next few months, but soon enough, we’ll come to terms with it. One of the most interesting encounters will take place when Bayern Munich, the reigning champions of Germany, will head to Berlin to take on midtable side 1. FC Union Berlin.

Union Berlin

Union Berlin aren’t all too far away from the Europa League qualification discussion, but in order to get to that point, they need to be far, far better than they have been in regards to consistency. They’ve got the spirit of a side that can grind out results but they can’t get out of their own way from a defensive standpoint. Parking the bus isn’t exactly a popular strategy in modern day football amongst fans and pundits, but it might be the only way Berlin will come away from this game with a positive result.

Team News

Friedrich is out through suspension whereas Becker and Gogia are out of action through injury. Malli is still recovering after testing positive for Coronavirus, whereas Felix Kroos is expected to feature.

Bayern Munich

The kings of Germany are quickly establishing themselves as the favourites to also claim the DFB Cup and potentially even the UEFA Champions League, meaning that if football does continue beyond the next few weeks, they could be heading towards a famous treble. In order to get to that point they have to avoid complacency, and with the title race being as tight as it is, fans need to realise that it’s going to be a slog for them between now and the end of the season.

Team News

Coutinho and Tolisso are out due to respective ankle operations with Sule being back in light training following his ACL tear. Lewandowski is set to return up top with Coman and Perisic also being tipped for the starting XI.

Factors to Consider

  • In their last meeting back in October, Bayern Munich beat Union Berlin 2-1.
  • Berlin have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
  • Bayern have won their last six games.
  • Berlin have scored 10 goals and conceded 12 in their last six games.
  • Bayern have scored 19 goals and conceded three in their last six games.

Conclusion

Union Berlin will start off with confidence and may even put Bayern into a corner at points, but if we’re talking about sheer quality, there really is no comparison between the two clubs. We’re expecting Bayern to put on a bit of a clinic, confirming their position as the frontrunners in the title race. We don’t think they’ll blow Berlin completely out of the water but it does seem as if the game will be over as a contest by the 60-minute mark – and that’s being generous.

Prediction: Bayern Munich win

Best Odds: 2/11
