In place of any league games in the Premier League this weekend, we will see a selection of intriguing encounters across some of Europe’s other top divisions. Still, even with that open market to play with, there isn’t a whole lot of respect being given to the Scottish Premier League. Perhaps that’ll change when Scotland compete at UEFA Euro 2021 but for the time being, we’re going to draw some attention to one of the most interesting games of the weekend – Aberdeen vs Rangers.

Aberdeen

Aberdeen have spent many, many years being the third wheel in the Old Firm’s relationship, and they’ll be desperate to try and shift that narrative in the next few months. It’s going to take quite the effort based on what we’ve seen so far this season but they shouldn’t be ruled out entirely, if only because the Scottish top flight tends to be more unpredictable than most casual fans realise.

Team News

There aren’t exactly many injury worries for Aberdeen to concern themselves with as the only confirmed absence at this stage is Michael Devlin. McInnes has a tendency to mix things up from time to time, and we wouldn’t b shocked to see him do the same at Pittodrie.

Rangers

The revival of Rangers Football Club has been a long and arduous process but finally, under the guidance of Steven Gerrard, they are in a position to win their first SPL title in what feels like forever. They have what it takes to kick on and really flourish both domestically and in the Europa League, and in truth, there’s no reason to believe that they won’t get themselves over the finish line.

Team News

Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe are the two big doubts for this game for Rangers who will be hoping to build on their win over rivals Celtic in the derby. In terms of confirmed absences, the following players will not be featuring this weekend for, in many ways, the champions-elect: Edmundson, Jones, Katic and Arfield.

Factors to Consider

  • In their last meeting back in November, Rangers beat Aberdeen 4-0.
  • Aberdeen have won three and drawn three of their last six games.
  • Rangers have won five and lost one of their last six games.
  • Aberdeen have scored seven goals and conceded two in their last six games.
  • Rangers have scored 12 goals and conceded four in their last six games.

Conclusion

Aberdeen have improved an awful lot since the last time these two sides met and we’re expecting them to give Rangers a decent game. It may not be enough for them to pick up the win but we do think they’ll be able to hold the league leaders to a draw which, all things considered, would be a really positive result for them. If they pull it off, they’ll have the belief that they can go on to challenge Celtic in what is turning out to be a battle for second place.

Prediction: Draw

Best Odds: 7/2
