AC Milan and AS Roma will lock horns with each other in the UEFA Europa League this week. The first leg of the quarter-final tie between the two Serie A clubs will be held at San Siro and is scheduled to kick off at 8 pm UK time on Thursday.

AC Milan

AC Milan are one of the biggest clubs in the world and an Italian giant. They have won Serie A and the UEFA Champions League in years gone by, and it is a disappointment for the Rossoneri that they are playing in the UEFA Europa League now – Europer’s second-tier club competition.

Milan featured in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League this season. Stefano Pioli’s side ended up third in Group F behind Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain, who finished first and second respectively in the standings. Stefano Pioli’s side then entered the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie which they won against Slavia Prague 7-3 over two legs.

The Rossoneri will head into the first leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie against AS Roma at San Siro on Thursday evening on the back of a 3-0 victory over Lecce at home in Serie A. It came after a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina away from home in the league which followed a 3-1 win against Hellas Verona on the road in Serie A.

Team News:

AC Milan are likely to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation against AS Roma. Mike Maignan will be in goal for the Rossoneri and will have Davide Calabria, Matteo Gabbia, Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez in front of him in defence. Yacine Adli and Tijjani Reijnders will be the two holding midfielders. Samuel Chukwueze, Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao will be the three attacking midfielders. Olivier Giroud will lead the line for Milan.

AS Roma

AS Roma are one of the biggest clubs in Italy and are going from strength to strength under Daniele De Rossi. Roma were in a bad place when Jose Mourinho departed, but under club legend De Rossi, the Italian club are back to being a force to be reckoned with and could end up in the top four of the Serie A table.

I Giallorossi are fifth in the Serie A table at the moment. Roma have picked up 55 points from 31 matches and are only three points behind Bologna, who are fourth. There is a chance that Roma could even catch Juventus, who are third and are on 62 points.

Roma will head into the UEFA Europa League match against Italian rivals AC Milan on the back of a 1-0 victory over Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome in Serie A. It came after a goalless draw with Lecce away from home in the league which followed a 1-0 victory over Sassuolo.

Team News:

AS Roma are likely to line up in a 4-3-2-1 formation against AC Milan. Mile Svilar will be in goal for the home team and will have Zeki Celik, Diego Llorente, Gianluca Mancini and Angelino in front of him in defence. Bryan Cristante, Leandro Paredes and Lorenzo Pellegrini will be the three midfielders and will have Paulo Dybala and Stephan El Shaarawy in front of them in attacking midfield. Romelu Lukaku will lead the line for Roma.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Olivier Giroud has scored 15 goals and provided 9 assists in 37 matches in all competitions for AC Milan this season.
  • Christian Pulisic has scored 13 goals and provided 7 assists in 39 matches in all competitions for AC Milan this season.
  • Romelu Lukaku has scored 17 goals and given 4 assists in 37 games in all competitions for AS Roma this campaign.
  • Paulo Dybala has scored 13 goals and given 8 assists in 28 games in all competitions for AS Roma this campaign.
  • AC Milan are 13 points ahead of AS Roma in the Serie A table.

Conclusion

Both AC Milan and AS Roma are in good form at the moment and will fancy their chances of winning the UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie. There is unlikely to be any ‘home advantage’ for either team in either leg because they are both Serie A clubs and know each other inside out. Milan do have a better team and should eke out a narrow win in the first leg.
