The Serie A title race truly is widely open this season with a string of clubs attempting to make their case for a run at the gold – but throughout the entire campaign, AC Milan are the ones who have been leading the charge. Their rise back to prominence has been one of the stories in football over the last twelve months, and they’ll hope to keep that surge going against one of Italian football’s most exciting clubs – Atalanta.
AC Milan
AC Milan have been the laughing stock of the Italian elite for a few years now ever since their decline really began, with that working in association with Juventus’ rise to the top of Serie A. However, it’s starting to look like Milan are the real favourites to win the title this season with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mario Mandzukic serving as their veteran partnership up top. They may not be conventional but under the current set of circumstances, all you need to be is consistent.
Team News
There are plenty of problems for Milan to deal with, especially now that Calhanoglu and Hernandez have tested positive for COVID-19. Saelemaekers and Romagnoli are both suspended with Gabbia, Bennacer and Krunic also being ruled out for the hosts. Thankfully for them, it does seem like Ibrahimovic will be fit enough to feature.
Atalanta
From Champions League exploits to mixing it up with the big boys in Serie A, it seems as if there no limits to what Atalanta can accomplish when they really start to pick up some momentum. Whether or not they have any kind of recognisable ceiling is something that we’ll probably begin to discover in the next year or so but at this moment in time, all you can really do is praise what they’ve been able to accomplish so far – seemingly overnight.
Team News
Pasalic is still recovering from an injury and will be unable to feature in this game, but outside of that, Atalanta have no other major concerns.
Factors to Consider
- AC Milan are in 1st place with 43 points whereas Atalanta are in 6th place with 33 points.
- AC Milan have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
- Atalanta have won four and drawn two of their last six games.
- AC Milan have scored 10 goals and conceded five in their last six games.
- Atalanta have scored 16 goals and conceded four in their last six games.
Conclusion
Given their run of form, we can picture a scenario in which Atalanta come and grab an early lead before sitting back on what they’ve got. Given how well Milan have done under pressure so far this season that probably isn’t going to be the best move for them, which is why we do believe the league leaders are going to snatch an equaliser. It may slow them down in their title quest but in the grand scheme of things, it should be viewed as an important point.
