The Euros and Copa America have officially come to an end and in its place, major European leagues across the continent are set to get underway shortly. However, there are a couple noteworthy top tiers that are already deep into their campaign already – including Major League Soccer. All clubs are pushing for a place in the playoffs and today, we’ll be previewing what should be an intriguing battle of styles between Atlanta United and New England Revolution.
Atlanta United
Atlanta United burst onto the scene a few years back and even managed to capture the MLS Cup in just their second season. Ever since then they’ve failed to consistently reach those heights again but as we all know, it’s pretty difficult to do so in a league as unpredictable as this one. ATL is a city of really passionate fans and while this campaign may not be going quite to plan, they’ve definitely still got a bright future ahead of them.
Team News
Atlanta have the definition of a depleted squad starting off with Ibarra, Adams and Hyndman, all of whom have been ruled out through injury. Martinez, Rossetto and Damm are all doubtful with Guzan, Bello and Robinson being called up to the US Gold Cup squad. Barco, on the other hand, will play for Argentina in the Summer Olympics.
New England Revolution
After years of not quite living up to the reputation that New England has built for itself in US sports, the Revolution have finally exploded into life this season and look poised to claim one of the top spots heading into the playoffs. This young side may still be a few years away from really peaking and while that may scare some supporters, we think it should ignite the flame of excitement that comes with the rise of a sleeping giant.
Team News
Caicedo is still out as he continues his recovery from injury with Turner and Buchanan both being called up to the Gold Cup with the United States and Canada respectively.
Factors to Consider
- New England are in 1st place in the Eastern Conference whereas Atlanta are in 10th.
- Atlanta have drawn four and lost two of their last six games.
- New England have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Atlanta have scored six goals and conceded 10 in their last six games.
- New England have scored 12 goals and conceded 11 in their last six games.
Conclusion
While Major League Soccer is one of the most unpredictable leagues in the game today, we still don’t expect Atlanta to pull off an upset against a New England side who will be desperate to get back to winning ways. They’re more than happy to leak goals in the name of moving forward and with that kind of wreckless style, it’s easy to see why folks would bet against them – but we just can’t picture Atlanta keeping them out. In terms of an official prediction, we’re going to say 2-0 New England.
