The Champions League is back with all teams having two fixtures left to try and book their place in the next round of the competition. A lot of the groups are still up in the air and that’s particularly accurate when describing Group B. All four clubs are in with a shot of making it through to the knockout stage and the reported “Group of Death” is set to come down to the wire with Atletico Madrid hosting AC Milan in one of two enticing fixtures this week.
Atletico Madrid
While they may have only lost one game in La Liga, Atletico Madrid have certainly been stumbling to kickstart the new season. The reigning Spanish champions understandably have the weight of the world on their shoulders but for whatever reason, they just can’t seem to kill teams off. They possess the quality, but now they need to be more confident in front of goal – which is easier said than done.
Team News
Felipe is now out through suspension, replacing Griezmann who has now served his own. Trippier and Felix are both still on the shelf through injury with Suarez’s starting place not being guaranteed as a result of his poor recent form.
AC Milan
AC Milan are locked in a fierce battle to try and win the Serie A title for the first time in what feels like forever, and it’s clear to see that’s where most of their focus and attention has gone. They’ve been overcoming the odds for months in Italy but in the Champions League, the unfortunate result of them being stuck in the Group of Death means they’ve been edged out in a lot of really tight games.
Team News
Ibrahimovic will be assessed before being given the all-clear to play, with the following list of players being officially ruled out through injury: Rebic, Maignan, Bakayoko, Calabria, Castillejo and Tomori.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in September, Atletico beat Milan 2-1.
- Atletico have won two, drawn three and lost one of their last six games.
- Milan have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games.
- Atletico have scored 11 goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
- Milan have scored 12 goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
Conclusion
Milan are going to throw the kitchen sink at Atletico and while that might make for an entertaining clash of styles, we’re not so sure it’s going to be the best avenue to victory for them. They need to be a bit more selective when they go forward because otherwise they’re going to be vulnerable to the counter – which, we believe, will lead to an entertaining 1-1 or 2-2 draw.
