Bayern Munich welcome Eintracht Frankfurt in the last round of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season, in a game which will see the Bavarians lift the title for the seventh consecutive time – if they don’t lose.
Bayern Munich
The season started rather shakily for the defending champions with poor performances and results leading to dressing room problems and spats between the players and manager Niko Kovač, but as the campaign progressed they found their feet and started going down the right track again. For a long time it seemed they might yet be pipped to the title this time by Borussia Dortmund, but they overtook their practically only rivals in style – by beating them 5-0 in early April. They will, however, be regretting their Champions League exit at the hands of finalists Liverpool in the round of 16.
There is still much to be sorted out once the season is over for the Bavarians, not least the future of the manager and several players, but at the moment, all their efforts will be focused on this game and beating Eintracht.
Team News
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer remains doubtful for the final league game of the season having missed the last month with a calf problem.
Eintracht Frankfurt
Despite Bayern’s title chase and superiority on paper, don’t expect the visitors to just roll over for them. Eintracht have a battle of their own to fight sitting currently in sixth place on 54 points, one less than Bayer Leverkusen in fifth and Borussia Monchengladbach in fourth, two more than Wolfsburg in seventh, and three more than Hoffenheim in eighth. It’s a very tight race for the final Champions League spot, as well as the two Europa League places, so every point and every goal is likely to count.
The team that pipped Bayern to the DFB-Pokal trophy last season has made a splendid piece of business this term. They signed Luka Jović from Benfica on an initial loan deal with an option to buy for €7 million, and not only did they get an incredible season from the striker, but they’ve reportedly already agreed a deal with Real Madrid to sell him to the Spanish giants for €60 million.
Team News
Midifleder Sebastian Rode is out with a knee injury he suffered in Eintracht’s Europa League semifinal defeat against Chelsea, while fullback Taleb Tawatha also misses out with an ankle problem.
Conclusion
Bayern’s motivation to win this game is likely to prove too much for the visitors to handle at the Allianz Arena. Their players have developed a strong winning mentality over the years, none perhaps more so than striker Robert Lewandowski. The former Dortmund man is highly likely to get on the scoresheet and help his team clinch the title.
Verdict: Robert Lewandowski to score.
