The UEFA Champions League is back once again this week as we approach the second legs of our round of 16 ties. There are still plenty of big names competing for a place in the quarter-finals, but you could argue few ties are as high profile as this one. On Wednesday, Bayern Munich will attempt to take advantage of their first leg lead when they play host to Paris Saint-Germain in Germany.
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich are currently in the midst of a real tussle in the German Bundesliga as they attempt to keep hold of their crown. On top of that, they also want to prove to everyone that they’re still one of the most intimidating teams on the continent. They’ve got a great blend of young stars and veteran players, but now, it’s all about piecing it together and seeing if there are any areas that still require improvement.
Team News
While Pavard is suspended, Hernandez, Neuer and Mazraoui are expected to miss out through injury.
Paris Saint-Germain
While they’ve enjoyed a great deal of domestic success in recent times, Paris Saint-Germain still haven’t been able to enjoy the kind of European dominance they set out to have when their investment period really began under new owners. They’ve gotten close, but they have yet to lift that famous European Cup – despite having one of the most remarkable squads that we’ve ever seen at this level.
Team News
Neymar is out for the remainder of the season with Kimpeembe, Hakimi and Sanches also on the shelf.
Factors to Consider
- Bayern won the first leg 1-0 thanks to a second half Coman goal.
- Bayern have won five and lost one of their last six games.
- PSG have won three and lost three of their last six games.
- Bayern have scored 15 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
- PSG have scored 13 goals and conceded 11 in their last six games.
Conclusion
The visitors will have to really come at Bayern and push a high tempo if they want to stand a chance here. Alas, we just don’t think they have enough options to cause the German champions any significant problems. It’s going to be a hard fought affair, without a shadow of a doubt, but we still think Munich are going to be too strong across 90 minutes as they secure a 2-1 win on the night, and a 3-1 triumph on aggregate.
