International football is back in our lives as the qualification period for UEFA Euro 2020 continues. Teams up and down the continent of Europe are attempting to progress into the tournament, which is set to take place in just over a year. One of the games that we’ve going to be taking a look at today comes from Group C, as Belarus prepares to host Germany. A few years ago this would’ve been considered a David vs Goliath type of encounter – but that doesn’t quite feel like the case this time around.
Belarus
After ensuring that they will be playing in the play-offs one way or another, there probably isn’t going to be all too much concern from Belarus regarding their bottom place standing in the Group C table. They were taken apart at the hands of The Netherlands towards the start of the group, whereas in their last game, they were beaten by Northern Ireland. There’s still a long way to go before the play-offs, though, and they’ll want to try and start building up their confidence with some wins.
Team News
Alexander Hleb has been left out as he edges closer and closer to retirement, with Belarus’ young crop of stars starting to force their way into the squad.
Germany
Germany’s win over The Netherlands back in March certainly gave them cause for hope, but it’ll take a while before they can start to rebuild their reputation that was kind of destroyed at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Their old stars are starting to be phased out in favour of fresh, new talent, which is what the fans have been clamouring for in the last few years. Now, it’s time to see how they cope under the big lights.
Team News
Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger, Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos and Juve’s Emre Can have all missed out on selection for the squad, which kind of gives you an idea of what direction the German national team is going in right now.
Factors to Consider
- The game will be played at Borisov Arena.
- Belarus have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Germany have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games.
- Belarus have scored six goals and conceded six in their last six games.
- Germany have scored 10 goals and conceded 10 in their last six games.
Conclusion
While it does seem like Belarus are slowly starting to progress as a footballing nation, we can’t see them making any legitimate waves against the Germans. They might get a fortunate goal and they might even take the lead because of it, but in the end, the 2014 world champions are going to run out as convincing winners. As a whole, this group should be fairly easy for Germany to navigate their way through, although we’ve seen how much of a decline they’ve been on since the start of the World Cup last year.
