Serie A football is back in our lives once again this weekend as we continue through a host of fixtures following the winter break. Things are really starting to heat up in the title race but towards the bottom of the table, there are still a handful of clubs waiting to break out and make some real noise. Today, we’ll be taking a look at two with a whole lot left to prove – Bologna and Spezia Calcio, as they attempt to give some of the teams around them something to think about.
Bologna
The last five years have led to widespread mediocrity for Bologna in Serie A. They are more than capable of pulling off a surprise result here and there but for the most part, they are far too happy to settle, especially when they’re put under a bit of pressure. Thankfully for them, they keep it tight at the back and rarely look in genuine danger of being dragged into the bottom three – case in point, the current state of the table.
Spezia Calcio
In what is their third consecutive Serie A season, Spezia Calcio are doing much of what they’ve done in years gone by. Their transfer strategy continues to be fairly erratic but at this moment in time, they are doing just about enough to fend off the threat of relegation. If they’re feeling daring, which they rarely are, they should see that this is a golden opportunity for them to start pushing towards the top half.
Factors to Consider
- Bologna are 12th in Serie A with 23 points whereas Spezia are 15th with 18 points.
- Bologna have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
- Spezia have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games.
- Bologna have scored seven goals and conceded six in their last six games.
- Spezia have scored seven goals and conceded 10 in their last six games.
Conclusion
Both sides are expected to make a handful of changes for this one, if only to try and change things up following an inconsistent patch. We think it’ll be a stern battle in the middle of the park with both having their moments, making for a fairly unremarkable game. We’re going to back either a 0-0 or 1-1 draw, with neither side being particularly pleased given their current bottom half form.
