After months away, the UEFA Champions League is back. Football fans around the globe flock to this competition and see it, in many ways, as the pinnacle of club football across the world. We’re now down to the last 16 teams with everyone eyeing up a spot in the final, including Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, with both of these underdog teams believing they could make a real run in this year’s UCL.
Borussia Dortmund
They aren’t exactly the favourites to take home the Bundesliga title, but Borussia Dortmund are on fire right now. They are firing on all cylinders in every department across the pitch, which is great to see when you consider how long they’ve spent in the ‘bridesmaid’ role, if you will. If other clubs aren’t careful, Dortmund could easily slip through the cracks and do something special this season.
Team News
Kamara and Moukoko are currently out through injury with Morey being listed as a fitness concern.
Chelsea
Despite all of the money they’ve been spending, Chelsea are still really struggling to make any kind of impact in the Premier League. It’s too soon for Graham Potter’s job to be considered but in equal measure, they need to start picking up results sooner rather than later. The Blues won’t believe they can actually win the Champions League, but at the very least, just put in a good showing.
Team News
Kante, Broja, Mendy and Pulisic are all confirmed to be absent for this visit whereas Zakaria, Fofana, Kovacic and Sterling are doubts.
Factors to Consider
- Chelsea and Dortmund have never faced each other in European competition.
- Dortmund have won their last six games in all competitions.
- Chelsea have won one, drawn three and lost two of their last six games.
- Dortmund have scored 17 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
- Chelsea have scored three goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
Conclusion
While we firmly believe that anything can happen in the Champions League, we aren’t exactly expecting any upsets here. In fact, we think this could be the most one-sided tie of them all in the round of 16. We expect Dortmund to come out firing in front of their home crowd and by doing so, they’ll get the advantage in the final third – rattling Chelsea before going on to secure a 2-0, or even 3-0, victory.
