Borussia Dortmund and Mainz will lock horns with each other in the Bundesliga this weekend. The match between Niko Kovac’s side and Bo Henriksen’s team will be held at Signal Iduna Park and is scheduled to kick off at 4:30pm UK time on Sunday.

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund are one of the biggest clubs in Germany who are used to competing for the Bundesliga title and playing in the UEFA Champions League. While Die Borussen are doing well in Europe at the moment, they have been dire in the league.

Dortmund finished a disappointing fifth in the Bundesliga table last season and did not challenge for the title. Things are even worse for them right now, with The BVB as low as 11th in the league table with 35 points from 26 matches, as many as 10 points off the fourth spot in the standings.

Dortmund will head into the Bundesliga match against Mainz on the back of a 2-0 defeat to RB Leipzig away from home in the Bundesliga just before the two-week international break. It came after a 2-1 victory over Lille in France in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round o1 6 tie that saw them book their place in the last eight of Europe’s premier club competition.

Team News:

Borussia Dortmund are likely to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Gregor Kobel will be in goal for the home team. Waldemar Anton, Emre Can, Nico Schlotterbeck and Julian Ryerson will be the four defenders. Marcel Sabitzer and Pascal Gross will be the two holding midfielders. Karim Adeyemi, Julian Brandt and Maximilian Beier will be the three attacking midfielders. Serhou Guirassy will lead the line for Dortmund.

Mainz

Mainz are a modest club in the German top flight who tend to finish in and around mid-table. Die Nullfünfer ended up 13th in the 18-team Bundesliga last season, and the hope was to finish in a similar position this time around.

Bo Henriksen’ side are exceeding expectations right now. Mainz are third in the Bundesliga table at the moment with 45 points from 26 matches, level on points with fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. There is a very good chance that Karnevalsverein will clinch a UEFA Champions League place.

Mainz will head into the Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park this weekend on the back of a 2-2 draw with Freiburg at home. It came after a 3-1 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach on the road in the league which followed a 2-1 win against RB Leipzig away form home in the Bundesliga.

Team News:

Mainz are likely to line up in a 3-4-2-1 formation against Borussia Dortmund. Robin Zentner will be in goal. Danny da Costa, Moritz Jenz and Maxim Leitsch will be the three central defenders. Antony Caci, Kaishu Sano, Nadiem Amiri and Phillipp Mwene will be the four midfielders. Paul Nebel and Lee Jae-Sung will be the two attacking midfielders. Jonathan Burkardt will lead the line for Mainz.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Borussia Dortmund have lost 4 of their last 6 Bundesliga games.
  • Borussia Dortmund have lost 11 and won 10 of the 26 Bundesliga games this campaign.
  • Borussia Dortmund have conceded 41 goals in 26 Bundesliga games this campaign.
  • Mainz have conceded 28 goals in 26 Bundesliga matches so far this season.
  • Mainz have won 4 of their last 6 Bundesliga matches.

Conclusion

Borussia Dortmund have been dire in the Bundesliga this season, and although they are at home for this particular game, Mainz are likely to eke out a narrow win. The visiting team are on a high and are in better form, and they should be able to get the job done.
