All 32 teams involved in the 2018 FIFA World Cup have now played their first game of the tournament, and while some teams have been lacking in quality, we certainly haven’t been lacking in drama. While a handful of nations have already been sent packing we’re still left with many top contenders, all of whom are aiming to progress into the knockout stages and see where their luck takes them. Two such examples are none other than Group E competitors Brazil and Costa Rica.
Brazil
There’s no doubting that Brazil will have a chip on their shoulder heading into this one after they were unable to secure the victory that they desired against Switzerland. The draw meant that they’ll have to ensure that they win their final two games to really rubber-stamp their place in the knockout stages, and that won’t be easy. They started really well in their opener before fading down the stretch, and if they do that against a more high-quality side, then they could end up being found out in a big way.
Team News
The big concern in the Brazil camp rests with star striker Neymar, who hobbled out of training with a supposed injury. He came into the tournament full of confidence after recovering from his last setback, and many fans will be left holding their breath ahead of kick-off.
Costa Rica
Four years ago Costa Rica were one of the stories of the World Cup in Brazil. They managed to exceed all expectations by reaching the quarter-finals, and on another day, they could’ve easily made it to the final four. In their WC opener against Serbia, however, they failed to showcase the same kind of school or tenacity that was on display last time around. They’ve still got a lot of heart but when it comes to the quality of their line-up, we have to question how well they’ll be able to compete with the favourites.
Team News
Bryan Ruiz is said to be struggling with a back issue ahead of this game, but aside from that, Costa Rica should have a fully fit squad to choose from.
Factors to Consider
- Brazil have a 9-1 record against Costa Rica, with their only loss coming back in 1960.
- Costa Rica have two wins and four losses in their last six games.
- Brazil have four wins and two draws in their last six games.
- Costa Rica’s final group stage game will be against Switzerland on Wednesday.
- Brazil’s final group stage game will be against Serbia on Wednesday.
Conclusion
Even when you’re the favourites of any given international tournament, it can be difficult to live up to the expectations. As we saw during their opener Brazil really struggled to get a foothold in the game once they were faced with adversity, which is something that will pop up again when they go toe to toe with Costa Rica. With that being said, this isn’t the same team that went on a miraculous run four years ago – and for that reason, we’re backing Brazil to edge out a narrow 2-1 victory.
