Brazil will be looking to lift their ninth Copa America title on Sunday as they take on Peru in the final at the Maracanã.
Arguably one of the tournament’s favourites, the Selecao take on a Peru side looking to lift the title for only the third time in the nation’s history.
Brazil
It is fair to suggest that Tite’s side are the heavy favourites heading into the final considering their form so far at the tournament. In five games, the hosts have won four, with their 0-0 draw against Venezuela the only flaw of their campaign so far. They put in a tremendous performance in the semi-finals to progress past great rivals Argentina, with goals from Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino either side of the break gifting them a priceless victory. As a matter of fact, their stunning form stretches beyond the Copa America. Brazil have not tasted defeat in any of their last 15 matches in all competitions. A huge factor behind that has been their defensive solidarity having not conceded a single goal since a 3-1 victory against the Czech Republic way back in March. They now have the opportunity to keep their eighth consecutive clean sheet for the first time ever in the country’s footballing history.
Having last lifted the Copa America in 2007, they will also be looking to extend another positive record having won the last four finals in which they have appeared.
Team News
Despite heading into the final as favourites, Tite has a few injury problems to contend with. Chelsea winger Willian has already been ruled out of the final with a thigh injury. Richarlison is also a major doubt through illness and is expected to join Fernandinho on the sidelines. However, Filipe Luis could be fit enough to return to action.
Peru
Despite having managed to reach only their third ever Copa America final, Peru might feel slightly fortunate to have even got their. Ricardo Gareca’s men endured a slightly underwhelming group stage, including getting thumped 5-0 by final opponents Brazil in the final match. They also required penalties to progress past Uruguay. However, their most impressive performance arguably came in the semi-finals as they dispatched of Chile 3-0 with goals coming from Edison Flores, Yoshimar Yotún and Paolo Guerrero. Peru now have a wonderful opportunity to win their first Copa America title since 1975.
Team News
Peru have constantly altered their starting line up throughout the tournament but are this time likely to name an unchanged lineup from the semi-final victory against Chile. Forward Guerrero will hope to continue his good form having scored two goals at the tournament so far.
Key Facts To Consider
- Brazil have a far better all-time head-to-head record between the two teams (W32, D9, L4)
- The Selecao have already beaten their opponents 5-0 in the tournament group stages
- Brazil have not conceded a goal against Peru since 2016
- Peru could become the outright fourth most successful side in Copa America history with a win
- Brazil have won the competition in every year in which they have hosted it
Conclusion
It is extremely difficult to see past a Brazil win in this particular final. The Selecao arrive in red-hot form and should possess more than enough talent to swat aside Peru. Whilst Gareca’s troops will put in a respectable fight, the 5-0 scoreline between the two teams earlier in the tournament should provide plenty of clues.
