The final day of the Premier League season is almost upon us and there’s still a whole lot left to be determined at both the top and the bottom of the table. Across 37 games we’ve seen a whole lot of drama in English football’s top flight and across the 10 fixtures on Sunday, we’re expecting that to continue. Today, we’re going to take a look at what should be an incredibly tense battle between Brentford and Leeds.
Brentford
As far as first seasons back in the big time go, Brentford have done pretty well. They’re currently sat on 46 points and haven’t been anywhere near the danger zone for weeks now, highlighting just how well the Bees have been able to make the transition. At this stage, they head into the final day knowing they could finish in the top half, which is the definition of a huge incentive in terms of the squad’s morale.
Team News
Zanka is out for this one with Ghoddos, Pinnock and Onyeka all being tipped to potentially return for Thomas Frank’s side.
Leeds
Leeds United were always going to struggle with the dreaded second season syndrome and, indeed, here they are. Jesse Marsch has done his level best to try and steady the ship but they now head into his fixture in 18th place, showcasing just how far they’ve fallen from this time last year. They’ve got players in their first team who can make magic happen but it’s going to take a whole lot more than that to get the job done.
Team News
A whole lot of players are going to miss out here with Bamford being a doubt and the following being either injured or suspended: Summerville, Forshaw, Roberts, Dallas, Ayling and James.
Factors to Consider
- Leeds need to better Burnley’s result against Newcastle to survive.
- Brentford have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
- Leeds have won one, drawn two and lost three of their last six games.
- Brentford have scored 10 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
- Leeds have scored five goals and conceded 10 in their last six games.
Conclusion
While Brentford may not have as much to play for as Leeds, we expect to see them play some fluid football to celebrate the fact they’ve been able to survive – and in some style – in their first Premier League campaign. Leeds, meanwhile, are going to be a bit anxious, which is why we’re predicting a 1-1 draw that won’t quite be enough to prevent them dropping into the Championship.
