Burnley and Manchester City will lock horns with each other in the Premier League this coming week. The match between Vincent Kompany’s side and Pep Guardiola’s team will be held at Turf Moor and is scheduled to kick off at 8pm UK time on Friday.

Burnley

Burnley were the best team in the Championship last season. Not only did the Clarets win the title by a huge margin, but they also played wonderful football and were brilliant to watch. Vincent Kompany’s side ended the campaign with 101 points from 46 matches, as many as 10 points clear of second-placed Sheffield United.

It will be interesting to see how Burnley do in the Premier League this season. Kompany is a former Manchester City defender, and he will be determined for his Burnley side to play football the way they did in the second tier of English football. The main objective for Burnley this season has to be to survive in the Premier League.

Burnley have been quite active in the summer transfer window trying to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. Centre-forward Zeki Amdouni has joined from FC Basel and goalkeeper James Trafford has switched from Manchester City. Dara O’Shea, Jordan Beyer and Nathan Redmond have moved to Turf Moor as well this summer.

Team News:

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany is likely to include goalkeeper James Trafford in the starting lineup against Manchester City.  Jay Rodriguez will lead the line for the Clarets. Jóhann Berg Gudmundsson will start at right wing. John Cullen will be deployed in central midfield.

Manchester City

Manchester City had a hugely successful season in 2022-23. The Citizens won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League last season. It was the first time that a club from England had done the treble since Manchester United back in 1999. And the Etihad Stadium faithful will expect the team to do it all over again this campaign.

City have arguably the best squad in the Premier League and will be the favourites to win the title. It is going to be harder this time around. Liverpool will get stronger, and so will Manchester United. Arsenal will also be more determined than last season to finish ahead of Manchester City and win the Premier League title. The Gunners pushed the Citizens really hard for the title last season.

The Citizens have been quite busy in the summer transfer window so far. Central defender Josko Gvardiol has joined from RB Leipzig and midfielder Mateo Kovacic has moved from Chelsea. Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan have left the Citizens.

Team News:

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is likely to line up in a 4-1-3-1 formation. Eriling Haaland and Julian Alvarez will be the two forwards in attack. Ederson will be in goal for the defending Premier League champions. Jack Grealish and Phil Foden will be the two side players. Rodri will be the sitting midfield.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Burnley scored 87 goals in 46 Championship matches last season.
  • Burnley conceded 35 goals in 46 Championship matches last season.
  • Manchester City won 3 of their 4 pre-season friendly matches.
  • Manchester City scored 9 goals in 4 pre-season friendly matches.
  • Manchester City conceded 5 goals in 4 pre-season friendly matches.

Conclusion

Burnley are at home for the Premier League match against Manchester City and will head into the game at Turf Moor high on confidence. Although the Clarets have a far inferior team to that of City, they will give the Citizens a run for their money. However, Pep Guardiola’s side will get the job done in the end and pick up all three points from the encounter.
