As we look ahead to 2020 there’s a whole lot to look forward to in the world of football – but before we write off 2019 once and for all, there are a few more fixtures for us to sink our teeth into. One that we’re particularly eager to see unfold will take place at Turf Moor as Burnley go head to head with Manchester United. These two sides have very different ambitions for the remainder of the season, and yet, this is probably going to be much more even of a game than it has any right to be.
Burnley
Sean Dyche’s men seem happy enough to linger around the mid-table region as opposed to scrapping it out down the bottom of the table in the relegation scrap. Burnley tend to fluctuate between resembling a bunch of fourth tier amateurs and looking like a team capable of challenging for a spot in the Europa League, which makes for quite the contrast. If they can get off to a bright start early on against the Red Devils, then don’t be surprised to see them pull off a somewhat surprising result.
Team News
Lennon and Gibson are both doubtful for this one whereas Jeff Hendrick is set to return from suspension. Barnes will also probably feature with Gudmundsson back to full fitness.
Manchester United
Underestimating Manchester United is easy to do in the present day because they always seem to mess up when it appears as if it’s nearly impossible for them to do so. They’re starting to show some resiliency up top with the manner in which they move forward on the ball, and they also look tight at the back. Now, all they need to do is try and keep that up across 90 minutes as opposed to throwing in the odd stupid mistake from time to time.
Team News
Bailly, Rojo, Fosu-Mensah, Dalot and McTominay are the notable absences through injury with Paul Pogba being tipped to make his first start in months.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in January, Burnley drew 2-2 with Manchester United.
- Burnley have won two and lost four of their last six games.
- Man United have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
- Burnley have scored three goals and conceded 12 in their last six games.
- Man United have scored 14 goals and conceded five in their last six games.
Conclusion
Contrary to popular belief Manchester United don’t actually concede all too many goals, and we can’t see Burnley getting past them here. It’s going to be a pretty tight affair between the two Northern sides which may not make for the most attractive game of football in the world, but that’s what you get sometimes in the Premier League. We think United are going to edge out the Clarets in a professional performance that gives Ole Gunnar Solskjaer some more momentum in the top four race.
