The Premier League returns this weekend, and one of the games we’re most interested in will see Burnley host Tottenham Hotspur. These two sides couldn’t be having more different seasons, with Burnley struggling at the bottom of the table whereas Spurs have a chance to do something great. Logic dictates that there’s only one way this game should go when it comes to the result, but as we all know, it’s never that easy to predict how things will transpire in English football’s top flight.
Burnley
Sean Dyche has a long way to go before he can get Burnley back to the heights they were at last season, but at least he’s taken the first few steps towards doing so. They don’t have the deepest of squads and they aren’t one of the ‘richest’ clubs in the Premier League, and yet, they continue to fight. There are teams around them that seem to be worse off so it’ll be interesting to see whether or not they can avoid the drop this season, because if they can’t, Dyche’s tenure at the club will almost certainly be in jeopardy.
Team News
Aaron Lennon and Jonathan Walters will miss out, with Lowson being tipped to replace Bardsley and Defour being a doubt.
Tottenham
Despite crashing out of both cup competitions in quick succession, it still feels like Tottenham have a lot of reasons to be excited from this point forward. Mauricio Pochettino has built a squad capable of doing some really big things, and it feels like just a matter of time until they fulfil that. They’re currently harbouring outside hopes of winning the Premier League title, and while it seems unlikely, Liverpool and Manchester City have both been known to have a slip up or two in their back locker.
Team News
Harry Kane could make it to the bench after recovering from his injury quicker than expected, although Davies, Alli and Janssen are still missing.
Factors to Consider
- The game will be played at Burnley’s Turf Moor.
- Burnley have won two, drawn three and lost one of their last six games.
- Tottenham have won four and lost two of their last six games.
- Burnley have scored eight goals and conceded 10 in their last six games.
- Tottenham have scored 10 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
Conclusion
Burnley are starting to show signs of the team everyone once knew from last season, but not to the point where we think they’re going to pick up the win or even get a point from this one. Spurs’ hopes of winning the title are slim but even so, it feels like they’re going to give it one hell of a shot between now and the end of the season. The Clarets will pose some problems, mainly in the first half as they attempt to set the tempo of the game, but in the end, we think they’re probably going to fall short.
