The FA Cup is back in our lives this weekend, as we gear up for the final round before things start to get a little bit more serious. This seems to be the point at which teams decide just how much they want to commit to the competition in comparison to everything else they have to deal with. One game that many fans are already writing off as a guaranteed result is Chelsea vs Sheffield Wednesday, in what will serve as a classic Premier League vs Championship encounter in the fourth round.
Chelsea
While there may be many rumours regarding the future of Maurizio Sarri, it still feels like Chelsea are in a positive position given what they’ve been able to accomplish so far this season. Sure, there are issues here and there, but there’s every chance that they could pick up some silverware this season. The Blues have decent strength in depth to the point where they should see this as a pretty simple win, but we all know that’s not how it works in the FA Cup.
Team News
Olivier Giroud is set to miss out with a slight knock, which opens the door for Gonzalo Higuain to finally make his long awaited debut for the Blues. Hudson-Odoi is also expecte to get some game time.
Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday are lingering in the bottom half of the Championship table, without any real kind of direction. They aren’t huge contenders for the playoffs or relegation, which will be considered a waste for many fans after a few years of reaching for the stars. With that being said you’d think they might try and prioritise a competition like this, or at the very least, see this game against Chelsea as their own personal cup final for the season.
Team News
Michael Hector is set to miss out courtesy of the terms of his loan move from Chelsea. Lucas Joao will be pushing for a start as Wednesday deliberate over whether to start Nuhiu or go with the more seasoned veteran in Steven Fletcher.
Factors to Consider
- The game will be played at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge.
- Chelsea have three wins, one draw and two losses in their last six games.
- Wednesday have two wins, three draws and one loss in their last six games.
- Wednesday lead the overall head to head standings 41-37 with 46 draws.
- In their last meeting back in April 2000, Wednesday won 1-0.
Conclusion
This one seems fairly conclusive in the eyes of many, and we’re going to fall in line and predict that Chelsea will progress with relative ease. Despite Wednesday having the advantage historically it really doesn’t feel like that’s going to matter, as the Blues are just far too strong for them. We’re expecting an entertaining first half hour or so with the Championship side really coming forward with some heavy attacks, only for Chelsea to score just before half time and then again just after half time to secure the win.
