The Premier League is back once again this weekend for the final set of fixtures before we enter the always-crazy month of December. There are so many teams up and down the top flight who are in desperate need of some points on the board before this period hits, mainly because momentum can be such a vital piece of the puzzle during the winter schedule. Today, we’re going to be taking a look at what has turned out to be a clash between two of this season’s surprise title contenders: Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
Chelsea
Now that Frank Lampard’s transfer dealings seem to be paying off on the pitch, it’s time for the world of football to sit up and take notice of the boys in blue. They are a terrifying side to play and they’re hitting their stride at just the right time, although because of that, the expectations are starting to be raised with each and every passing game. They’re good, but the moment has come for them to kick on and become great.
Team News
The only major concern for Chelsea is Pulisic who Lampard is hoping to see return after a slight thigh injury. Elsewhere, veteran Thiago Silva is likely to come back into the starting XI in place of Rudiger.
Tottenham
It seems as if Jose Mourinho has a huge chip on his shoulder, and based on recent results, that must be a good thing. Tottenham still don’t seem to be playing to their full potential and yet they’re picking up wins in every direction and in every available competition. It isn’t going to last forever, of course, but if they can start to find a way to really let all of their big attacking players shine, this title push could be more serious than we all first thought.
Team News
Alderweireld’s groin injury isn’t as bad as first thought but he will still miss out on the game at Stamford Bridge. On the flip side, Lo Celso and Lamela are both injury dobuts.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting, Tottenham beat Chelsea on penalties in the EFL Cup back in September.
- Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 10 games since the Spurs loss.
- Tottenham have won seven of their last eight games.
- Chelsea have scored 18 goals and conceded two in their last six games.
- Tottenham have scored 12 goals and conceded three in their last six games.
Conclusion
On paper this should be an incredibly fun game of football to watch, but as we all know, the Premier League rarely works like that – which is especially true for these two clubs. We’re expecting Tottenham to sit back and frustrate Chelsea from a defensive standpoint because if they open up even slightly, the Blues will punish. Alas, the hosts have such a strong attacking presence right now that we don’t think it’ll be possible to keep them out, which is why we’re backing them to beat Spurs 1-0.
