We’re now into the final four stage of Copa America 2019, and business is really starting to pick up. After a nervy quarter-final stage without all too many goals to speak of, the expectations are high as we gear up for what should be two highly competitive semi-final ties. Chile and Peru are going to be contesting one of those games, and while this may not be as simple as a David vs Goliath kind of tie, it’s definitely the sort of game in which one team is heavily favoured above the other.

Chile

While Chile may have slipped up in their last group stage game, they’ve looked pretty good throughout the course of the tournament so far. As the two-time defending champions you could argue that there isn’t all too much pressure on their shoulders, especially with Brazil being tipped so heavily to lift the trophy. Alas, they’ve managed to fly under the radar once again, and they’re just two wins away from being the first nation in the modern era to win the Copa America three times in a row.

Team News

Chile are not expected to make any changes to their starting XI ahead of this crucial semi-final tie, with Sanchez being set to lead the line once again.

Peru

Peru failed to live up to expectations at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and after their group stage performances, it seemed as if the same was going to be true of their Copa America campaign. In the end, though, they’ve been able to pull it back pretty well, edging their way through the quarter-finals on penalties. They’ve got a couple major danger men that Chile need to watch out for, as they attempt to reach the final of this competition for the first time since back in 1975 when they won the whole thing.

Team News

Polo and Farfan were both dropped for the quarter-final against Uruguay, and the duo are hoping to return to the first team here.

Factors to Consider

  • Chile lead the overall head to head standings 45-22 with 14 draws.
  • Chile won two and lost one of their Copa America group stage games.
  • Peru won one, drew one and lost one of their Copa America group stage games.
  • Chile beat Colombia on penalties in their Copa America quarter-final.
  • Peru beat Uruguay on penalties in their Copa America quarter-final.

Conclusion

Peru may have surprised a lot of people during their win over Uruguay, but we can’t see history repeating itself here. Chile may not be playing to their full potential right now, but they should still have enough to edge their way through to the final. We wouldn’t be surprised to see another low scoring affair that goes into extra time, but even if that is the case, we can only picture one team making it all the way through to the 2019 Copa America final: and that is the reigning two time defending champions Chile.
