The Premier League season is starting to draw to a close and while there’s still a whole lot up in the air regarding what’s going to happen up and down the table, the title race is one thing that doesn’t appear to be in question. There’s a mathematical chance that things could go south for the frontrunners but right now, it’s very unlikely that anyone other than Manchester City will be crowned champions. As such, this weekend could be pretty important for the league leaders as they travel to the capital to face Crystal Palace.
Crystal Palace
There’s a relentless frustration within the Crystal Palace operation that has been seeping through the cracks in the last few years. Instead of lingering around the bottom half of the table, many fans want to see them thrive – but under Roy Hodgson, it no longer feels as if that’s a tenable position. The veteran manager looks destined to leave at the end of the campaign and if that happens, it could be the dawning of a whole new era for the club.
Team News
Cahill, Wickham and McArthur are all fitness doubts for Palace with the following players being officially ruled out through injury: Sakho, Hennessey, Tomkins and Ferguson.
Manchester City
Manchester City have won the Carabao Cup, they’re in the semi-finals of the Champions League and they’re on the verge of capturing another Premier League title. If that doesn’t signal success then we don’t know what does, but either way, Pep Guardiola’s men are on their way to cementing their status as one of the greatest teams in Premier League history. Now, they just have to stay focused on a huge few weeks of action.
Team News
Stones is out through suspension but outside of that, Guardiola has a full squad to choose from. De Bruyne isn’t likely to feature from the word go in the starting XI after recently recovering from an ankle injury with more heavy rotation expected.
Factors to Consider
- In their first meeting back in January, Man City beat Palace 4-0.
- Palace have won one, drawn two and lost three of their last six games.
- Man City have won four and lost two of their last six games.
- Palace have scored five goals and conceded 11 in their last six games.
- Man City have scored eight goals and conceded six in their last six games.
We actually think the Eagles will start off really well here with City still recovering from their Champions League exploits during the week. Palace know how to push teams back when they want to but their biggest issue is not being able to sustain that forward momentum throughout the course of an entire game. Therefore, we expect the visitors to wake up a bit more in the second half and really go on the offensive – ending in a 3-1 win that could be enough to win them the title.
