We’re starting to get down to the nitty gritty of UEFA Euro 2020 with there now being just eight nations left in the running to become European champions. One side of the bracket is looking pretty stacked with three of the favourites still in contention, whereas on the other, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will progress to the final. Today, we’re going to take a look at what should prove to be a fascinating quarter-final tie between Czech Republic and Denmark.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic hadn’t been given much of a chance to succeed by the pundits as we came into this tournament but instead of fading away, they’ve strung together some really impressive results including a win over Scotland, a draw with Croatia and a huge victory against the Netherlands. They aren’t going to be fearing anyone in the next few weeks and rightly so, with many tipping them to be the underdogs in this particular clash.

Team News

Boril is back from suspension with the expectation being that he will immediately return to the starting XI. Barak and Sevcik were both surprising starters in the game against the Dutch with the one “clear as day” pick right now being Schick, who continues to hunt down the golden boot.

Denmark

Denmark began this tournament on the verge of tragedy after their talisman Christian Eriksen went into cardiac arrest on the pitch. Then, ever since, they’ve been on an absolute tear with consecutive dominant wins to give them more momentum than just about anyone else in the Euros this year. We aren’t saying they can go on and win the whole thing, but betting against them after everything they’ve gone through feels a bit foolish.

Team News

Eriksen is obviously still out indefinitely as the squad continues to push forward in his honour. Kjaer is a fitness doubt after he came off half way through the second half against the Welsh, with Poulsen also being doubtful. Dolberg is expected to feature following his brace in the last game with Denmark having their full squad to choose from aside from that.

Factors to Consider

  • The winner will play England or Ukraine in the semi-finals.
  • Denmark finished 2nd in Group B with three points.
  • Czech Republic finished 3rd in Group D with four points.
  • Denmark have scored nine goals and conceded four at Euro 2020.
  • Czech Republic have scored five goals and conceded two at Euro 2020.

Conclusion

We expect the Czechs to try and make this something of a slugfest by dragging the Danes into a defensive battle – but for whatever reason, we just think Denmark’s will and overall spirit will be able to guide them through. We know there’s a bit more to it than that in the beautiful game but in all honesty, it’s hard to bet against them after what they’ve been able to produce in the last few games. Therefore, we’re predicting a 2-0 win for Denmark on Saturday night.
