Things are starting to heat up in the race to reach UEFA Euro 2020, with a series of nations needing one or two more big results in order to really solidify their place in next year’s finals. There are some incredibly fine margins involved in qualification at this point of proceedings, and two nations that are really going to be feeling that are Denmark and Switzerland. The two both reached the 2018 FIFA World Cup Round of 16, but now, their route to qualifying isn’t quite so simple.
Denmark
The Danes currently find themselves situated in second place after five games, with two wins and three draws – and no losses to speak of. They’re just two points behind the Republic of Ireland who lie at the top of the group, and if they can get another victory here, they’ll be taking a huge step towards next year’s tournament. With that being said, though, they have a tendency to let three points slip through their fingers, as their recent run of draws will tell you.
Team News
Gytkjaer, Dolberg and Cornelius are all competing for spots in the starting XI, with Skov being tipped to get a place in the team ahead of Braithwaite. Andersen and Billing could potentially debut, but there are still some question marks over what kind of a team the manager wants to put out.
Switzerland
Once considered to be a new superpower within world football, Switzerland now find themselves on the outside of that conversation looking in – just waiting, and hoping, for the time that they can break through to that next level. They’re currently in third position in their group of five nations in Group D, and while they haven’t lost a game yet, two wins and two draws isn’t exactly the kind of inspiring form that you would hope if you’re a fan of the Swiss national team.
Team News
Zuber, Shaqiri and Moubandje are all still out of action, which could serve as the difference maker for the visitors. Mehmedi and Freuler will both compete for a place in the starting line-up, with fans wondering what kind of formation the boss is going to go with.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in March, Denmark and Switzerland drew 3-3.
- Denmark have won two and drawn four of their last six games.
- Switzerland have won two, drawn three and lost one of their last six games.
Conclusion
Denmark and Switzerland are both going to be a little bit more anxious than they probably should’ve been, mainly due to a series of strong performances from the Republic of Ireland. We can’t see this one being quite as much of a goalfest, though, and in the end, we think the Danes will have enough to get the job done at home. The Swiss will be strong and give Denmark a good fight, but there’s the home atmosphere in Copenhagen will guide them towards a vital three points.
